Not all prisoners of war are the same, and of course not every POW is a hero, just as not every soldier is automatically a hero. That is why we should not mix the worthy with the unworthy.
History offers many examples where a soldier, while fighting the enemy to the very end, was wounded or lost consciousness during the battle, as a result of which he was captured as a POW, and after being released was awarded high decorations for bravery. Such cases are, of course, rare compared to the cases where soldiers simply surrender (often even without fighting) and end up captured.
Therefore, the army and the state are obliged to distinguish between such prisoners, because judging everyone equally is a serious mistake and an injustice.
