Being a patriot is easy when your country is victorious. It’s easy to hold your head high when you know that a few decades ago your army crushed the enemy forces and liberated your historic lands. I’ve seen a lot of this kind of opportunistic patriotism—during nearly three decades of living in the United States and almost a decade in Armenia. Those opportunistic patriots, who endlessly quoted our heroes’ words and waved flags, are now doing nothing to lift Armenia out of its current weak state. They do nothing and, bluntly speaking, have quietly crawled into their holes and don’t even make a sound.
However, it is very hard to be a patriot when your country is defeated and continues to be humiliated by the enemy. It’s hard to hold your head high when your country’s army, as a result of internal betrayal, suffered a disgraceful defeat just a few years ago. Yet it is precisely in such times that true patriots reveal themselves. It is in these times that one must be a patriot, because under these conditions the Fatherland needs our patriotism most. This is the kind of struggle that gives true patriots a reason to live. A true patriot stands by his Fatherland in critical times—until death—just as a true friend is the one who stands by your side in difficult times.
The defeat five years ago at least did one good thing—it tore off many masks and purified our ranks from the opportunistic, loud-mouthed fake patriots for whom Armenia’s glory and honor never really meant much to them or it never truly mattered. Such people are now easier to spot than ever. It showed that everyone is a patriot—until the moment comes when something patriotic must actually be done.
That’s why now is the time for real patriots to unite and organize under one national structure, to continue the struggle and prepare for the great crisis ahead. We are obliged to show all Armenians and the world what true Armenian patriots are like—to show how we can hold our heads high for the glory of Armenia and continue the fight, no matter what.
One Nation, One State, One Will
Hail Armenia and Victory!
