While living in California during my formative years, I participated almost every year in the large marches that take place in Los Angeles on April 24. But in my final year in the United States, I did not participate. The Four-Day April War had begun at the very start of that same month, and I realized something very important: that moving to Armenia, serving in the army, participating in the coming war, and engaging in politics would benefit the Fatherland a thousand times more than attending such marches every year.

Every year I attended those marches or similar events, yet I saw no real change, because year after year I watched how the Armenian diaspora was increasingly assimilating before my eyes, while a new war against my country was beginning in this 21st century.

I realized that I needed to express my patriotism in a more effective and useful way. For that reason, I took personal responsibility, recognized my duty to the Homeland, and took a decisive step—later that same year, in November, I came to Armenia with a one-way ticket. I wanted to serve as an example to my truly patriotic compatriots scattered throughout the world: that if we want to take revenge against the enemy and show that the genocide they committed against us has failed, then we must take more serious steps. We must heed the call of the land and undertake a true march toward Ararat.

In the previous century we were massacred and driven from our sacred land, but in this century we must return to the land of our ancestors and, within the limits of our abilities, continue our struggle for justice until victory. We must show the world that the struggle is not over—rather, it is only beginning, because the Armenian nation is being reborn and will punish all of its enemies.
